Job Posting:

Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s largest building materials companies and North America’s leading supplier of cement, aggregates, ready-mix concrete, and asphalt. We have hundreds of plants and thousands of employees working across the world.

Heidelberg Materials is developing North America’s first full-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) solution for the cement industry at its Edmonton plant. Starting in 2027, up to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) will be captured, transported by pipeline, and permanently sequestered in deep saline storage formations. This project will be a critical component that will allow Heidelberg and our customers to reduce emissions in the built environment and support carbon-neutral concrete offerings.

Heidelberg Materials is seeking a Project Lead who will be based at our Cement Plant in Edmonton, AB. This position reports to the Engineering Manager, CCUS. This position will be responsible for projects that support the capture project’s process risk mitigation efforts. This includes the extensive piloting program, and emissions testing both existing plant, and the processed flue gas. Key to your success in this role will be the ability to manage projects that are highly technical, which will be supported by your strong chemical and process background. You will support the overall delivery of the capture project by assisting with process and permitting support. It is also expected that this position will provide construction and commissioning support during the execution phase. Finally, after the plant is fully operational, it is anticipated this position will be integrated into the site’s technical support team and contribute to Heidelberg’s other carbon capture initiatives.

What you will get to do:

  • Manage, develop, and review the amine-based post-combustion CO2 capture pilot plant testing program

  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and routine testing of gas and liquid samples, including interpretation of analytical results

  • Develop and validate analytical methods in accordance with established practices

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair equipment, report outages, and arrange repairs of the CO2 capture pilot plant and laboratory equipment as necessary

  • Review analytical and quality control data on an ongoing basis

  • Document and communicate test results and findings effectively and follow up with the CCUS team and CO2 capture vendors

  • Maintain compliance with the Health, Safety, and Quality Management Systems requirements

  • Manage, review, and interpret the stack test and Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) data

  • Assist in technical FEED studies, including cost estimates for CC application at our prioritized manufacturing plants. Collaborate with internal technical specialists and operations personnel and outside consultants, equipment suppliers, technology providers, and contractors as needed to complete the studies

  • Assist in preparing of tender documents, including scopes of work, specifications, and design documents to describe services and equipment to be procured from outside consultants, equipment suppliers, technology providers, and contractors

  • Assist in conducting proposal and tender reviews and participate in the evaluation and related purchasing activities

  • Assist with technical reviews of design documents and development plans, including: model reviews, reliability availability and maintainability (RAM) analysis, and operational reviews, including Hazop studies

  • Assist with the commissioning of CC facilities

  • Support transition to operations activities, including operation and maintenance training and development of standard operating procedures

  • Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting of operational CC facilities

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Engineering required, preferably in Chemical or Mechanical disciplines. Other engineering degrees will be considered with relevant work experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the large-scale project development and process improvement or research development in post-combustion CO2 capture with amine-based solvent or industrial gas, oil and gas, chemical, utility, or another closely-related industrial field

  • Proven experience in managing and maintaining pilot plants and laboratory equipment.

  • PMP and/or other PM certification is an asset

  • Understanding of project management practices and tools, including schedules, cost reporting, and controls. Demonstrated experience working with other consultants and contractors, and coordination of major projects

  • Demonstrated skills to understand, influence, empathize and communicate with people on project teams to achieve the project’s goals

What we have to offer:

  • Competitive base salary and participation in our annual incentive plan

  • Highly competitive benefits programs

  • Pension retirement savings plan with an automatic company contribution as well as matching contributions
