General Statement of Duties

The City of Eugene is hiring a Part-time (32-hour per week) Hult Center Custodian

The Hult Center Custodian maintains clean and orderly facilities, equipment, and vehicles at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts by performing janitorial duties, small-scale building maintenance, and occasional minor grounds keeping. This will be a part-time position that works 32 hours per week.

Salary Range: $18.09 - $22.52 Hourly

Must reside in the state of Oregon and be able to report onsite for work as needed in Eugene, OR to meet business needs.

Schedule: Part-time, 32 hours per week, will work various shifts and weekends depending on building needs

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, reaching and 50-pound lifting requirement with or without accommodation.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the duties listed or may be required to perform additional similar duties in order to meet business needs and/or changing business practices.

  • Performs janitorial duties such as dusting, sweeping, mopping and stripping, waxing, and buffing floors, cleaning carpets, washing windows, cleaning and sanitizing kitchen, lunchroom and lavatory facilities, and emptying trash; mostly works independently and with a team to provide clean and safe facilities for city staff, the general public and visitors.

  • Performs limited building maintenance, repair, and graffiti removal tasks. Reports needed building maintenance repair and reports hazardous conditions or safety problems.

  • Operates a variety of custodial equipment, hand and power tools, and vehicles to perform cleaning and maintenance duties; services and repairs small equipment to keep it in good working condition; trains on specialized equipment for proper and safe use.

  • Maintains daily records of custodial activities and assists with re-stocking cleaning and janitorial supplies.

  • Cleans and maintains custodial equipment.

  • Responds to inquiries and requests from City staff and the general public utilizing friendly and effective communication and customer service skills, determining the needs of the customer and providing appropriate assistance and information; and represents the City in a positive manner.

  • Performs basic maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas surrounding facility; pressure washes sidewalks and parking areas; vacuums debris; weeds, trims and waters landscaping.

  • Provides orientation to new employees, including demonstrating the proper and safe use of custodian equipment and processes.

  • Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace and helps create a supportive workplace for all employees.

  • Maintains ability to work assigned locations and work schedules.

  • May operate a City vehicle.

  • Performs related and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

  • Equivalent to six months, full-time experience in custodial and building maintenance work, including cleaning or minor maintenance and upkeep of work area or other related experience.

  • Experience working in large facility is desirable.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment is desirable.

License or Certificate:

  • Valid Oregon driver’s license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

MUST PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Use of common cleaning equipment, tools, materials, supplies and chemicals needed to perform janitorial, minor building maintenance, and minor vehicle servicing work.

  • Routine janitorial practices and methods, including safety procedures, proper handling, operation and maintenance of equipment, and basic building safety tasks.

  • Identify occupational hazards and use of proper safety precautions and processes.

  • Principles and practices of strong customer service.

  • Knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to understand product labels and instructions.

Skills In:

  • Performing minor repairs and maintenance of building fixtures using hand and power tools.

  • Performing assigned custodial tasks independently by following oral and written instructions regarding established routines and guidelines; and assist co-workers as needed.

  • Prioritizing tasks and performing a full range of assigned janitorial duties by working independently and in a team environment.

  • Properly researching safety data sheets online to determine appropriate safety precautions.

  • Working effectively with coworkers and work cooperatively with staff during public events to meet operational requirements; and may provide assistance to other custodial workers.

  • Properly using specialized custodial equipment and successfully completing specialized trainings.

  • Providing courteous customer service and working harmoniously with the general public, supervisors, co-workers, and employees, representing various diverse backgrounds.

  • Effectively communicating both orally and in writing to convey information and to receive work assignments.

  • Ability to work assigned shifts as needed.

  • Maintaining written records of work schedules, duties and supply inventories.

  • Performing the physical duties required of the position as outlined in the working conditions.

  • Ability to pivot seamlessly between tasks.

What to Expect from our Selection Process: Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in this class is done generally in an office environment. Some assignments may include working outdoors. Requires constant standing and walking with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting. Constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching. Frequently required to lift up to 35 pounds, occasional lifting up to 36-60 lbs. Work includes operating a variety of tools and equipment that may require additional and advanced training. Exposure to moving equipment, dust fumes, electric shock, toxic/caustic chemicals and biological hazards. Duties may be performed in a closed facility and/or around the public and during public events. Required to work around and respond to difficult and confrontational situations and individuals. May require working at heights. Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves and eye protection are required.
