Position Overview

The Office of Strategic Communications & External Affairs (SC&EA) seeks to communicate the vitality and breadth of science at the laboratory. Working closely with SLAC staff, SC&EA drives SLAC's internal and external communication efforts and promotes the laboratory's mission through effective and imaginative communications to a wide range of audiences including the general public, press and media, educators, congressional representatives, funding agencies and members of the local community.

Our STEM Outreach & Events (SO&E) department has a temporary employment opportunity for a highly motivated STEM Outreach & Events Assistant. Under the day-to-day supervision of the Event Planning and Management Lead, they will work with our SO&E team to support STEM activities and resources, major summer staff and community engagement events. In addition, the ideal candidate will be performing assigned tasks to directly support other team activities and efforts that include the tour program, public lecture series, planning procedures and documents, website maintenance, and metrics tracking. This position will also include performing general administrative work and participating in creative and collaborative projects. Additional duties may be assigned.

Note : This is a non-benefits eligible casual-nonexempt position (work less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year. (maximum of 32 hours per week).

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Update and maintain the STEM Library on the Drupal website, including building new pages and editing existing content. Manage check-out and check-in of demo equipment. Organize storage for STEM outreach materials and supplies, track physical inventory of items.

  • Support the logistical planning and production of STEM outreach efforts and lab-wide summer and special events, and staff engagement activities organized by the team.

  • Assist in implementing our institutional outreach programs like the public tours and lectures, to include coordinating publicity activities and maintaining documents, resources and site content.

  • Research opportunities and contribute to team brainstorming to enhance outreach activities and events, organize data and collect metrics.

  • Help develop content for the team’s various platforms like websites, Slack channels and social posts.

  • Organize team supplies and manage inventory and storage.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Currently enrolled in a college level educational program or recently graduated. Relevant experience related to core duties is a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.

  • Experience with Drupal (or similar content management system) website page building and editing highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize and complete assignments.

  • Interest/experience in Communications, Marketing, STEM Outreach/Education and/or Event Planning is a plus.

The expected pay range for this position is $22.19 – $37.11 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
