POSITION DETAILS

CUNY seeks a University Dean of Technology and Computer and Information Sciences to serve as a University-wide thought partner on academic programs related to technology and Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) and as a leader on the preparation of students for technology careers following graduation. In the past five years, CUNY has doubled the number of tech/CIS bachelors' degrees awarded annually to over 2,000 and increased the percentage of students graduating with paid internships and job offers, aided by initiatives that include Mayoral Partnerships (CUNY 2x Tech), industry adjunct mobilization (Tech-in-Residence Corps), the embedding of apprenticeships, co-ops, and other earn-and-learn opportunities within degrees, and sector-based industry collaborations (NY Jobs CEO Council, CUNY Inclusive Economy Initiative).

The University Dean of Technology and Computer and Information Sciences will continue to build this momentum, coordinating and executing major initiatives designed to advance the priorities within CUNY’s Strategic Plan. The Dean will work collaboratively with Chief Academic Officers, Deans and Department Chairs across CUNY’s 25 colleges, as well as external partners from government and industry. The Dean will be responsible for shepherding the success of cross-campus tech and computer and information sciences initiatives, including the expansion of CUNY 2x Tech, career-connected campus capacity building, and the oversight of tech-related transfer initiatives. The Dean will participate in the development of budgets needed to support key initiatives, lead efforts to secure and steward external funding for university initiatives and manage grant-funded programs. The Dean will represent CUNY to relevant external organizations on related initiatives, including the New York City Mayor’s Office of Talent and Workforce Development, NYC Department of Small Business Services, and tech industry partners in collaboration with the Office of Careers and Industry Partnerships.

Reporting to the Senior University Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Programming, the University Dean will be a key member of the Executive Vice Chancellor’s Office of Academic Affairs Cabinet and work collaboratively with faculty and administrators throughout the University.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Academic-Facing Responsibilities

  • Develops programs and resources to support the development of faculty and students, with a focus on CUNY 2x Tech and related initiatives.

  • Oversees CUNY's Tech and Computer and information Sciences portfolio across 25 colleges and graduate schools.

  • Liaises with CUNY campus administration on behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) to coordinate activities, programs, and policy implementation.

  • Engages the Deans and Chairs from technology and computer and information sciences related schools and departments, creating and implementing an integrated University-wide strategy for technology education and post-graduate success.

  • Coordinates technology and CIS programs to develop best practices in advisement for transfer.

  • Fosters the development of new academic programs in line with economic trends/needs.

  • Monitors worker supply and demand in NYC and relates to enrollment data.

  • Facilitates the academic progression and career advancement of incumbent workers in tech and CIS-related fields.

Partnership and Relationship Management

  • Fosters education partnerships with external stakeholders on behalf of CUNY that promote OAA and campus goals related to tech education.

  • Represents CUNY on tech-and computer and information sciences related educational issues to public partners and trade organizations, featuring but not limited to – the Mayor’s Office of Talent & Workforce Development, Department of Small Business Services, and NYC Economic Development Corporation – including on policy and legislative issues.

Administrative Duties

  • Generates budgets to support the implementation of the initiative, and tracks and maintains updated spending in collaboration with the Senior Director for Budget and Operations.

  • Ensures the processing of all invoicing pertaining to the initiative at both the campus and central office level; drafts and supports execution of legal contracts and MOUs in support of directly-overseen initiatives.

  • Supports all data collection, analysis, evaluation and research agendas, and City reporting requirements in collaboration with the Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analysis (OAREDA) and consistent with CUNY policy (including IRB).

Marketing/Communications

  • Directs communication including the use of web and social media.

  • Supports press requests in collaboration with the CUNY communications team and other stakeholders as required.

  • Publicly promotes the work of the initiative through speaking engagements and publications.

NOTE : This position requires on-site presence five days a week at our midtown headquarters located at 205 East 42nd Street.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Academic preparation must be in Computer Science or closely related area.

  • Strong interest in AI and its integration into curriculum.

  • Master’s, Doctoral, or other terminal degree and seven years related experience.

  • Experience in a higher education setting including teaching experience in a tech or computer and information sciences related field.

  • Track record of developing and executing initiatives that engage academic and industry partners to better prepare and connect students to tech careers.

  • Understanding of recruitment and hiring processes in the technology sector.

  • Experience working with faculty and academic leaders to advance curricular or academic programmatic innovations and improvements.

  • Experience managing complex projects with multiple workstreams, deadlines, and requirements.

  • Experience with and commitment to outcomes-driven interventions, including a familiarity with development and implementation of data collection systems.

  • Entrepreneurial experience including building partnerships, pilot development, or initiatives with diverse stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with, and knowledge of, the CUNY system.

  • Demonstrated ability to listen to stakeholders, understand needs, and represent needs utilizing compelling, verifiable, and consistent data.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to independently establish plans and successfully execute multiple projects and manage conflicting priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Proven critical thinking skills, including a pro-active approach to problem-solving.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace diversity, accountability, and transparency.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$160,000 - $210,000, commensurate with qualifications, education and experience.
