Purpose: Under general supervision with broad scope of responsibility, the Mechanical Engineer performs complex activities related to the design, testing and evaluation of mechanical systems of food equipment machinery. Interfaces with applications, sales, manufacturing, sourcing, and customers to define needs for new or custom features to be developed in existing equipment. Creates CAD layouts, design solutions, calculations, regulatory work, etc. to ensure the delivery of customer specifications. May prepare mechanical engineering studies, specifications, and cost estimations. Assists with the solving of unique, mechanically related field problems. Works with manufacturing, sourcing, purchasing and suppliers to optimize the cost/value relationship of the mechanical systems being designed. Essential Duties and Percent of Time Spent: Lifecycle management of design data: create and check drawings, CAD models, ECNs, database management 55% Collaborate with cross functional partners to develop engineering value activities 20% Contribute technical and project management expertise in the testing, validation, and debugging of food equipment machinery 10% Perform detailed calculations to contribute to both the design and troubleshooting processes 10% Contribute to budgeting, scoping, scheduling of projects 5% Occasional Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements: Knowledge and Skills: BS degree in mechanical engineering or similar field from an ABET accredited engineering program and 3 to 5+ years of relevant experience in food machinery industry or fields related to product design. LANGUAGE SKILLS English fluency required. Can independently search for technical information. Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external customers in a proficient and professional manner. Ability to write clear product specifications and other forms of written correspondence. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts to accomplish job tasks. Must be computer literate, and capable of using spreadsheets, 3-D CAD (Autodesk Inventor most preferred), PDM (Product Data Management) systems, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems and other software. Experience: Preferred experience 3 to 5 years in automatic, industrial food processing equipment or similar fields in product development. Experience with Auto CAD, Inventor, Creo or similar CAD systems. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude through hands on experience. Scope of Responsibility/Accountability: Explain the degree of supervision/guidance, procedures/ processes used, judgement, creativity, planning & resourcefulness needed to do the job. Supervisory Responsibility: This position requires the ability to work with little to no supervision and maintain a high level of accuracy. Ability to work independently with creativity to problem solving skill is a must. Grow into role by collaborating and leading cross-functional RCI initiatives within JBT core values.
