Lilly’s Biotechnology Discovery Research (BioTDR) organization has a track record for delivering novel biotherapeutic medicines to advance into clinical research in key areas of unmet medical need including diabetes, oncology, immunology, neuroscience, and others.

This position is within the Protein Biosciences group at the Lilly BioTechnolgy Center in San Diego. We are responsible for supporting our protein and antibody discovery efforts, implementing a variety of tools including structural biology to characterize and understand target interactions, to aid in selecting optimal molecules for further evaluation and development. We are searching for a highly motivated and creative research scientist with a PhD degree in biochemistry, protein chemistry or related field to join a talented multidisciplinary team. This position provides an outstanding opportunity to transform ideas to clinical candidates.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Designing and implementing studies to elucidate antibody epitopes utilizing a variety of tools, but focusing on high-throughput surface plasmon resonance (SPR)

  • Embrace and celebrate diversity by using a relevant and unique background and set of experiences to provide new ideas to deliver innovative solutions drugging novel targets.

  • Strong communication (oral and written), organizational, and leadership skills are expected.

  • Bring new and useful concepts, methods, and ideas for how research can be improved and share these to make our group better.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, protein chemistry, or related field OR an MS in related field and 7+ years of relevant industrial experience.

  • 0 to 6 Years of experience in protein biochemistry, with a focus on the characterization of antibodies & proteins using a variety of biochemical and biophysical approaches; including tools that assess binding and affinity (such as SPR), stability, conformation, and association state.

  • Hands-on experience in protein purification and characterization of proteins and conjugates in academic or industrial settings.

Additional Skills and Preferences

  • Knowledge of protein structure-function relationship, and experience in biochemical analyses.

  • Familiarity with related structural biology tools, including electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, or Hydrogen/ deuterium exchange followed by LC-MS

  • Demonstrated self-initiative and appropriate risk-taking behaviors.

  • Exceptional problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Must be able to work productively and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple activities and thrive in a setting that requires quick movement between scientific challenges and comfort with ambiguity.

  • An active scientific curiosity and interest for complementary disciplines within the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
