City and County of San Francisco Recreation Coordinator - Camp Mather 2024 (outside of San Francisco) - Rec & Parks (3286) in San Francisco, California

Compensation: $34.4625/hour + Room and Board

Appointment Type: This position is a temporary exempt, as-needed appointment. This position is seasonal and will not result in an eligible list for a permanent civil service position. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer.

About Camp Mather

Each summer, RPD operates Camp Mather, a rustic family campground located near Yosemite National Park, approximately 3 hours east of San Francisco. Each week, about 500 campers enjoy a week-long stay at Camp Mather; enjoying a full range of recreation activities such as a supervised swimming pool and a lake for water activities, supervised recreation programs, hiking, and evening campfire entertainment. Guests stay in cabins, and enjoy 3 delicious meals each day, served cafeteria style with a full salad bar and excellent service.

RPD is accepting applications for three (3) temporary exempt positions in class 3286 Recreation Coordinator.

Camp Office Coordinator:  The broad duties of the Camp Office Coordinator are to assist the Camp Mather Management Team in providing a safe, clean, well-functioning camp for the enjoyment of the 500 weekly guests, on-site concessionaires, 70+ staff, and day-use visitors. The Camp Office Coordinator has specific duties as well as additional duties as assigned by the Camp Mather Management Team. The Camp Office will be the “Go To” place in case of emergencies.  Under supervision of the Camp Mather Management Team, the Camp Office Coordinator:

  • Coordinates all the Mather camper reservations (including check in and checkout) and on-site payments through ActiveNet (our registration system); resolves issues with the Camp Mather desk in San Francisco; conducts and reconciles all banking deposits and accounts for the Camp Accounts and weekly bank deposits in Groveland.

  • Ensures all accommodations and the overall camp areas are cleaned and presentable for the weekly turnover of camp on Saturday for the Sunday afternoon check-in of campers.

  • Manages all accounting systems including timesheets and payroll for all the 70 camp employees; inputs all data into the City’s emerge system; reconciles all overtime and payroll issues with RPD Payroll.

  • Manages the front office operations and supervises assigned staff; maintains and coordinates all the employees’ schedules during the entire Camp season; coordinates housing details based on Camp policies; performs all purchasing and work orders input/tracking; investigates various complaints and outstanding issues during the Camp season; ensures that all office and camp operations priorities are met; maintains records and develops reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; prepares statistical reports as required.

  • Conducts informational meetings with staff, and volunteers concerning policies, procedures, rules, regulations, safety awareness, and emergency protocols related to their specific assigned activities and overall responsibilities at Camp Mather. Trains and supervises Camp Office Staff; health and safety, supplies, emergency response, and customer service.

  • Develops and conducts surveys of the guests regarding recreation programs and facility use and customer service; compiles data, creates a report, and recommends new programs/protocols or revisions to existing programs/protocols based on survey results.

  • Is a member of Camp Senior Staff; acts as the staff coordinator and on-site facilitator for emergencies, complaints, other incidences, health/safety issues, etc.

  • Performs daily and weekly reconciliations. 

  • Procurement of goods and services.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Camp Field Recreation Coordinator: Under supervision of the Camp Mather Management Team, the Camp Field Recreation Coordinator:

  • Coordinates, oversees, and provides staff supervision of recreation activities, events, services, and operations of the Camp Mather Field Recreation Program. Responsibilities include development, implementation, problem solving, evaluation, and public relations.

  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods of providing assigned recreation program services; supervises designated staff and implements policies and procedures.

  • Monitors program and staff performance; recommends and implements modifications to programs and procedures.

  • Promotes programs and activities. Creates activity schedules for guests.

  • Maintains records, reports, and documentation concerning new or ongoing programs. Records and inspects recreation equipment inventory. Recommends need for supplies and purchase of recreation equipment.

  • Conducts informational meetings with staff, volunteers, policies, procedures, rules and regulations, safety concerns, and other relevant topics for subordinate staff.

  • Work with the Camp Mather Manager and Assistant Manager to plan and provide recreation experiences for camp guests and staff.

  • Procurement of goods and services.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Camp Ropes Course Coordinator: Under supervision of the Camp Mather Management Team, the Camp Ropes Course Coordinator:

  • Responsible for operating the Camp Mather Ropes Course.

  • Oversees and coordinates operations, services, and activities of the Camp Mather Ropes Course including program development, implementation, problem solving, program evaluation, and public relations.

  • Interacts with subordinate staff that work at the ropes course and other staff at Camp Mather including Camp Assistants, Recreation Leaders, and Lifeguards.

  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing assigned recreation program services; supervise designated staff and implement policies and procedures.

  • Monitor program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.

  • Coordinate and promote assigned recreational programs and activities.

  • Develop staff schedules.

  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; prepare statistical reports as required.

  • Conduct informational meetings with staff concerning policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to the Ropes Course at Camp Mather.

  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public; provide information regarding assigned recreational program area.

  • Procurement of goods and services.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Policies and Expectations of Staff

Work Conditions at Camp Mather

Housing and Meals: During employment, FREE meals and housing is provided to camp employees. Camp staff live in shared housing with other camp staff.

Nature of Work: Includes working both indoors and outdoors, exposure to sun, snow, rain, high/low temperatures, and potential wildfire smoke, and will regularly encounter insects.

Work Schedule: Work schedule to be determined. Shifts includes weekends and evenings. Overtime may be required.

Work Location: Camp Mather is located in the High Sierra near Yosemite National Park about 3 hours east of San Francisco.

Transportation: Camp Mather employees are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Camp Mather. Parking is available for personal vehicles. Public transportation and Rideshare Apps (Uber/Lyft) is limited and is not a reliable source because of our remote location.

Cell Phone & Internet: Camp Mather has VERY limited cellular and Internet/Wi-Fi services available on its grounds.

Tentative Schedule

March 16, 2024: Tentative start work date - training in San Francisco. 

May 11 - 19, 2024: Arrival at camp.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday are mandatory workdays - the two off days will be scheduled during the remainder of the week.

September 13, 2024: Conclusion of camp assignment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university AND

Experience:

4000 hours of experience leading recreational activities, performing recreational support services, and/or facility monitoring (experience as a security guard is not qualifying as facility monitoring).

Substitution:

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year for year basis. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal to 2000 hours.

Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Business Management, Physical Education/Kinesiology, Performing Arts, or Visual Arts may substitute for 2000 hours of experience as described above.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Valid California Driver's License 

  • Camp experience in a management capacity

  • Rock climbing and/or ropes course experience

  • Certification from PRCA (Professional Ropes Course Association) or ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology)

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified

  • Serve Safe Certified (If not Serve Safe certified, a Food Handler’s Card must be obtained)

  • Knowledge of Active Net or other similar recreation programming/registration on-line system

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, & Excel

  • Experience operating 2-way radios

  • Inventory management experience

  • Ability to work within a budget
