This vacancy is being announced at two different job classes Engineer Senior and Engineer 2 Graduate. The final class and starting salary is dependent on the successful applicant’s qualifications.

This position is located at Central Office in St. Paul. This position will have the flexibility to telecommute, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to complete a telework agreement. The incumbent may be expected to work in the office on occasion.

NOTE: Some relocation reimbursement may be available.

MnDOT’s Design Flexibility Unit implements the industry’s newest practices of flexible and performance-based design throughout the agency and statewide engineering community. We operate at the cutting edge of innovation and exploration.

In this position you will assist the Design Flexibility Engineer and Design Support Section Director with analysis, research, design guidance development, and design project investigations. You will provide assistance, information and training to MnDOT district offices and the statewide road design community. This includes responding to inquiries about Performance-Based Practical Design (PBPD) process and principles; developing design guidance and criteria; reviewing preliminary geometric layouts; aiding in concept and preliminary design development; contributing to training efforts; and generally assisting in the implementation of PBPD and complete streets.

MnDOT does not sponsor applicants for visas or Optional Practical Exam for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer Senior qualifications:

Employee must hold a Licensure as a professional Civil engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity. (Comity (Reciprocity). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)

AND experience in:

• Highway/street project design development, including geometric design of roadway elements (e.g., alignments, vertical profiles, and typical cross sections)

• Experience with state and national design policies related to geometric design, highway safety, roadway capacity, and practical and performance-based design.

• Experience with word process, spreadsheets, database management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Five years-experience in highway/street project design development (e.g., alignments, vertical profiles, and typical cross sections)

• Experience with MnDOT Road Design Manual and AASHTO “Green Book”.

OR

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineer Grad 2 qualifications:

All applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited College or University and two years professional level civil engineering experience in the areas noted below; (a Master's degree may be substituted for one year of the professional experience) plus applicants must have full completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

AND experience in:

• Highway/street project design development, including geometric design of roadway elements (e.g., alignments, vertical profiles, and typical cross sections)

• Experience with state and national design policies related to geometric design, highway safety, roadway capacity, and practical and performance-based design.

• Experience with word process, spreadsheets, database management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Five years-experience in highway/street project design development (e.g., alignments, vertical profiles, and typical cross sections)

• Experience with MnDOT Road Design Manual and AASHTO “Green Book”.
